The recent California fires exposed an important realization - current property and casualty policies may not be enough to protect a property in the event of a crisis. From a study done by Marshall and Swift, it is estimated that 76% of American homes are inadequately insured. To protect your greatest asset, you need to review all your policies, making sure they include a guaranteed replacement provision. You must also have a clear understanding as to what is not covered, and what, if any, additional coverage you may need. The Hartfield Company has advisors who can assist you in reviewing your current coverage and help make suggestions toward increasing your protection.
Remember, too, that property is not the only thing that can spiral you towards calamity. We live in a society where no one is immune from potential lawsuits. It is not uncommon for a claimant to name everyone involved in an incident who has perceived authority, responsibility, or just the ability to pay. Protection is available with an “umbrella policy” which can supplement both auto and homeowner’s policies for individuals, and commercial liability property and commercial automobile policies for businesses.
When evaluating personal liability insurance, consider the following:
- Everyone in the household should be covered, including those who do not live at home.
- The policy should cover physical injuries, libel, slander, invasion of privacy, malicious prosecution, wrongful eviction, defamation of character, and discrimination.
- Shop around for the lowest number of exclusions. For example, many policies will not help you if you are sued as a result of your participation on a board or less formal committee.
- Be aware of wording that limits coverage to exclusive causes of injury. [taken from “How Can I Extend My Liability Coverage?”, Emerald Publications 2007]
Whether your concerns involve you, your family, or your business, The Hartfield Company has access to a variety of carriers and a full range of insurance products, as well as years of expertise to go along with them. We can help you to be prepared in the event of a crisis, or just enable you to have peace of mind.
